Kossuth Co. inmate death determined suicide
Brunsvold was found in cell on Oct. 17
ALGONA — The death of a Kossuth County Jail inmate found unresponsive in his cell Oct. 17 was determined to be a suicide, according to a Friday news release from the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation.
An autopsy from the State Medical Examiner determined that Wesley man Christopher Mark Brunsvold, 44, died by ligature strangulation, ruling the manner of death a suicide.
Brunsvold was booked into the jail on Oct. 12 and was awaiting transfer to the Iowa Medical Classification Center in Coralville to begin serving a prison sentence for a probation violation.
The DCI reported that Brunsvold was interacting normally with another inmate and jail staff the evening before his death. Brunsvold and other inmates were placed in lockdown for the night at 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 16.
Brunsvold was alone in his cell until 7:12 the next morning, when he was discovered unresponsive, lying on his back in his cell’s bed.
Algona EMS pronounced the man dead at the scene upon arrival.
