5 charged in double homicide

All face 2 counts of 2nd-degree murder in June 16 shooting

Five local men have been charged with two counts each of second-degree murder stemming from the June 16 shooting that killed two men in the Pleasant Valley neighborhood.

Two Fort Dodge men, 25-year-old Jamael Cox and 47-year-old Tyrone Cunningham, were killed in a volley of bullets in the early morning hours of June 16. Two others were injured but survived: Marissa Andrews of Fort Dodge, 21, and Jayne Bartrom of Wesley, 30.

The Fort Dodge Police Department announced Monday that a five-month investigation spanning multiple jurisdictions and a dozen law enforcement agencies yielded charges for the following defendants:

• Michael J. Shivers, of Eagle Grove, 55.

• James C. Davis Jr., of Fort Dodge, 35.

• Michael J. Wells, of Fort Dodge, 33.

• Darrell L. Jones, of Fort Dodge, 23.

• Jeremiha R. Hatten, of Fort Dodge, 22.

In addition to the murder charges, all except Hatten face a felon in possession of a firearm charge, a class D felony.

Davis and Jones have been held in the Webster County Jail since July 2 and June 24, respectively, on a material witness warrant. Shivers was in custody before Monday’s announcement, as well. Wells and Hatten turned themselves in Tuesday evening after their charges were announced, according to Capt. Ryan Gruenberg, public information officer for the Fort Dodge Police Department.

Jones has been disputing his witness hold through personal letters to the court for months, court records show.

Shivers, Davis and Jones are being held on a $1,005,000 cash-only bond after their initial appearance in Webster County Magistrate Court Tuesday. Wells and Hatten will appear in Magistrate Court today.

“Working alongside one another, the community and law enforcement put forth unwavering dedication and resources to not only identify those responsible, but to prevent future acts of violence that devastate communities across the country,” Gruenberg said in a news release.

Over several months, the investigation resulted in the seizure of multiple firearms and significant quantities of narcotics, Gruenberg said.

“This is something that would not have been possible had it not been for the over one dozen public safety agencies and community working together. It is partnerships like this that move investigations forward and yield significant results,” he said.

The investigation was aided largely by information provided by community members willing to speak up, the news release noted.

The following agencies assisted in the investigation:

• Fort Dodge Fire Department.

• Webster County Sheriff’s Office.

• Webster County Medical Examiner’s Office.

• Webster County Attorney’s Office.

• Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

• Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s Criminalistics Laboratory and Crime Scene Unit.

• Iowa State Patrol and ISP Tactical Team.
