Standoff leads to arrest, gas leak
Officers found wanted man in FD trailer court
An early Sunday morning standoff between Fort Dodge police and a suspect who barricaded himself in a bedroom ended with the man in custody following a struggle that broke a natural gas line.
The incident happened at Skyview Trailer Court, 1341 Third Ave. N.W.
Fort Dodge police reported that Kristopher L. Smith, 31, was arrested and charged with second degree theft and interference with official acts in connection with the incident. He also faces charges on warrants for domestic assault, third degree harassment and interference with official acts.
Police reports list Eldora and Marshalltown addresses for Smith, but officers knew he had been staying in Fort Dodge recently.
Fort Dodge Police Department Capt. Ryan Gruenberg said officers were sent to Casey’s General Store, 1308 Third Ave. N.W. at 11:40 p.m. Saturday after employees there reported that a woman had been in the store, saying that a man had been assaulting her. The woman did not give her name, and was gone when police arrived.
”They didn’t have much to go on,” Gruenberg said of the responding officers. ”They were just looking in the area.”
At the Skyview Trailer Court, the officers found a vehicle that had been reported stolen in Eagle Grove. They knocked on the door of the trailer where the vehicle was parked and began talking to someone who answered the door. As they talked, a woman in the trailer, whom officers later learned was the individual at the Casey’s General Store, approached and said Smith was in the back bedroom.
”We had known him to have several outstanding warrants,” Gruenberg said.
When officers went to arrest Smith, he barricaded himself in the bedroom. Gruenberg said the officers tried to talk to Smith, but he stopped communicating with them.
A standoff that lasted about an hour and a half ensued.
Gruenberg said officers eventually used mace to fill the room where Smith was barricaded.
Smith jumped out the bedroom window and was captured by officers.
”There was a pretty good struggle out back,” Gruenberg said.
During that struggle, an exterior natural gas line connected to a gas meter was broken.
Fort Dodge firefighters and MidAmerican Energy crews were called to handle the gas leak. Utility workers had to shut off gas service to the entire trailer court to make the needed repairs.
Webster County sheriff’s deputies and the Iowa State Patrol also responded.
