Fort Dodge man dies in motorcycle wreck Monday

A Fort Dodge man has died following an apparent single-vehicle motorcycle accident in northwest Fort Dodge either late Sunday night or early Monday morning, Iowa State Patrol said.

On Monday afternoon, Iowa State Patrol identified the man as Landon Smith, 23, of Fort Dodge.

According to the Fort Dodge Police Department, the Webster County Telecommunications Center received a call about an unresponsive male lying in the grass near Hawkeye Avenue and Second Street Northwest shortly after 7 a.m. on Monday. Authorities were also told that a motorcycle was lying in the grass in close proximity to the individual.

FDPD and medics with Fort Dodge Fire Rescue arrived on scene and found Smith, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicated that Smith was traveling westbound when he struck a tree at the intersection of Hawkeye Avenue and Second Street Northwest, police say. It is unclear at what time the accident happened. Anyone with information is asked to call the Fort Dodge Police Department at 515-573-2323.

The Iowa State Patrol will continue the accident investigation.
