To protect and serve

Mychal Edler Firefighter/Paramedic, Fort Dodge Fire Department

Mychal Edler

How long have you been in the fire service/emergency medical service?

I have been a paramedic for six years, and have been a firefighter for the City of Fort Dodge for two years in October.

What other fire service/emergency medical service agencies have you served with?

I have served with the Bradgate Volunteer Fire Department, Calhoun County EMS and Trinity. I also work part-time with UnityPoint Health-LifeFlight.

What is an interesting fact about you that some might not know?

I’m decent at ice skating for some reason. I can’t roller skate to save my life, so I’m not sure where the ice skating came from.

What is the most memorable incident you’ve responded to?

I couldn’t even begin to answer that question. There have been many calls through my career that have made an impact on me.

What’s the best part of your day?

The best part of my day is our training time. It’s a great feeling when you get to learn, practice and finally put to use a new skill or tactic.

What gives you the most satisfaction in your job?

That I get the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life every day. From showing fire trucks to children, to helping a loved one make it home to their family.

What is the toughest part of your job?

Family all the way around. We tend to see families on one of the worst days of their lives. We also spend a lot of time away from our own families working 24-hour shifts.
