To protect and serve

MATT BURNS — Patrolman, Fort Dodge Police Department

How long have you been in law enforcement?

Six years.

What other law enforcement positions/departments have you served in?

I started my law enforcement career here with the Fort Dodge Police Department.

What’s the most memorable incident you’ve responded to?

I’ve had many memorable moments throughout my career. Some of the most memorable ones for me come from when I see the appreciation from the individuals that I’m assisting. You can tell when you have made a difference in someone’s life and that’s a good feeling to have.

What’s the best part of your day?

The best part of my day as a police officer is knowing that I have an opportunity to make my community a safer place to live.

What gives you the most satisfaction in your job?

I get a lot of satisfaction when I’m able to seize firearms from individuals who are possessing them illegally. Every gun that I’m able get out of a criminal’s hand means an innocent person can’t be hurt with it.

What’s the toughest part about your job?

I think the toughest part of my job is knowing that the job is never finished. No matter how hard you work trying to fight crime and help others, there will still be individuals that make poor decisions and others that will depend on you for help. At the end of the day, I know that as long as I do the best job I can, our community will be a safer place.
