After being hit by the vehicle, the deputy responded by firing one round at the suspect, identified as Sean McMillan, 31, of Fort Dodge.

A short time later, McMillan abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. He was later arrested at 309 S. Cadwell St. in Eagle Grove.

The incident began at about 2 p.m. when the deputy conducted a traffic stop on Iowa Highway 17 at 10th Street NW in Eagle Grove.

A deputy believed the vehicle was the suspect vehicle from a disturbance in Goldfield that the deputy had responded to, according to investigators.

The deputy identified the driver as McMillan. According to the DCI, the deputy determined McMillan was driving while barred, was in possession of a handgun as a felon and was a suspect in the disturbance call.

At that time, McMillan was placed under arrest, handcuffed and placed in the front seat of the patrol vehicle, which was a Dodge pickup truck with sheriff’s department markings on it.

As the deputy was dealing with the passenger in the suspect vehicle, McMillan jumped the center console of the truck and put the vehicle in drive.

He then drove at and hit the deputy, the DCI reported.

That’s when the officer fired a shot at McMillan.

No serious injuries were reported from the situation.

As a precaution, Eagle Grove schools were placed on lockdown for much of the afternoon.

McMillan is charged with escape from custody, a class D felony.

The deputy was transported to the hospital where he was treated and released.

The Wright County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Eagle Grove Police Department, the Iowa State Patrol and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
