Woman killed in officer-involved shooting

UPDATE:

One woman is dead following an apparent officer-involved shooting just south of Fort Dodge on Tuesday night.

The Fort Dodge Police Department and the Webster County Sheriff’s Office were called to 1518 20th Ave. S. shortly after 7 p.m. for a report of a suicidal female with two knives.

Minutes later, there was a report of shots fired at that location.

Neighbor Joe Echelberger said he was working on his roof when he saw the encounter.

According to Echelberger, the woman, who was not identified Tuesday night, ran at the sheriff’s deputy armed with a knife in each hand. That was when the deputy fired at the woman. The woman died at the scene.

The shooting occurred in the Coleman District, a neighborhood located just south of the Fort Dodge city limits.

The Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Fort Dodge Fire Department and the Webster County medical examiner also responded to the scene.

Police were dispatched to 1518 20th Ave. S. at about 7:10 p.m.

Minutes later, Fort Dodge firefighter/paramedics were called to the scene for a reported shooting.

The Webster County medical examiner was called to the scene a short time later.

The shooting remains under investigation.
