Man injured in explosion identified

The man who suffered serious injuries in a Tuesday night explosion outside of a Fort Dodge home has been identified.

Robert Olson, 43, of Fort Dodge, was injured in the blast, according to the Fort Dodge Police Department.

Olson suffered significant injuries to his left hand when a small homemade explosive device detonated unexpectedly at 809 S. 16th St., according to police. The explosion was reported at about 6:50 p.m.

According to police, information provided so far indicates Olson was handling a single, homemade device.

After receiving immediate medical attention at the scene, Olson was transported to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center.

From there, Olson was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. He is reportedly in stable condition.

According to police, the explosion is believed to be an isolated event and not an ongoing threat to the community.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting as the investigation continues.
