Tropical Smoothie Cafe on Fifth Avenue South announced Wednesday that it would temporarily close due to a positive case of COVID-19 with an employee.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe is the next to join a growing list of Fort Dodge restaurants and businesses closing due to new COVID-19 cases.

The cafe announced on social media Wednesday that one employee tested positive for COVID-19 and that they would be closed for deep cleaning until further notice. The positive employee did not have customer contact, defined as exposure closer than 6 feet for longer than 15 minutes. His most recent shift was on Monday.

Following the example set by some other restaurants, Tropical Smoothie decided to be transparent with the case, “as we are committed to our employees and customers and our actions should reflect that.”

“We decided to go this route because it’s safest for our customers and employees,” said Dave O’Brien, who owns and manages the cafe with his wife, Cori O’Brien.

The couple runs the cafe alongside about 15 employees.
