To protect and serve: Ryan Gruenberg, captain, Fort Dodge Police Department

Ryan Gruenberg

How long have you been in law enforcement?

My entire 10-year law enforcement career has been with the Fort Dodge Police Department.

What other law enforcement positions/departments have you served in?

Within the Fort Dodge Police Department I have served in the Patrol and Criminal Investigations Division, as well as Special Emergency Response Team.

What’s an interesting fact about you that some might not know?

I enjoy listening to a rather extensive array of music genres.

What’s the most memorable incident you’ve responded to?

While there have been many, the calls that involve children stay with you for a multitude of reasons. It is a challenge to see children in situations they cannot control.

What’s the best part of your day?

The best part of my day is being able to interact with the great men and women within the Fort Dodge Police Department. We have both young and old offering many viewpoints on the job and life in general. It is always great to hear their perspective.

What gives you the most satisfaction in your job?

The most satisfying part of the job is helping people. While that may sound cliche, there are many individuals who are in situations that they cannot get out of or need a resource to help them take that first step. It is satisfying when we are able to provide them the assistance they need to improve their situation.

What’s the toughest part about your job?

The overall stress this career field brings. It can stem from many things but can be overwhelming at times.
