Tee’d Off seeing record turnout

Golf tournament helps victims of violent crimes

The fourth annual Tee’d Off Against Violence fundraiser for the Homicide/Other Violent Crimes Program is anticipating a record turnout despite an endless wave of cancellations for most other events this year.

This year’s event, a golf tournament that will help families of homicide victims and survivors of other violent crimes get to appointments, go to out-of-town trials to witness the carriage of justice and pay for other incurred expenses, aims to meet or exceed last year’s $16,000 total.

Going from about 13 teams in its first year to 26 last year, the tournament already has 36 teams signed up for this year’s event, according to supervisor Marie Harvey.

“There’s definitely been a surplus of teams,” she said. “It’s something safe to do, socially distanced.”

Given that the event is the vital program’s only source of fundraised income each year, Harvey is thankful for the support so far and welcomes even more to help the program provide a variety of services not covered by grants.

With COVID-19 looming large, Harvey said the demand for services has increased, as victims hit by violent crime are finding themselves even more strapped for resources after the virus has displaced them or depleted their finances.

“There’s a greater need for different resources,” she said.

This year’s event will feature two silent auctions. The first will be at the kickoff event on July 31, at the Moose Lodge, where patrons can enjoy The Tank Anthony Band and participate in a 50/50 raffle from 7 to 10:30 p.m. The second will be at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course on Aug. 1. Those not golfing are welcome to participate in the silent auction and other activities.

Items up for bid include an autographed Green Bay Packers football, casino chips, tickets to view a taping of Wheel of Fortune, a Harley-Davidson-themed mini fridge and handmade baskets.

Golfing on Aug. 1 will have a shotgun start at 9 a.m., with a four-person best ball and prizes awarded. Participation is $50 per person or $200 per team before Friday. Prices go up $10 per person after Friday.
