Prison inmate dies at age 62

Autopsy planned to determine if COVID was a factor

An inmate at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility has died, according to a release from the Iowa Department of Corrections.

The Iowa DOC said that Ronald Eugene Holdsworth, 62, was pronounced dead at 4:43 a.m. on Saturday morning. Holdsworth was experiencing a medical emergency and was being transported to Unity Point Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center via ambulance when he died.

The cause of death has not yet been determined, the DOC said, adding that the state medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death and whether COVID-19 was a factor in the death. Holdsworth had multiple preexisting conditions, the DOC said.

Holdsworth had been serving a 25-year sentence for second-degree sexual abuse from Boone County. His sentence began on May 14, 2008.
