FDSH grad does truck pull in prom dress

Samantha Brennan, 18 of Fort Dodge, competed in the Manson Greater Crater Days Truck Pull on June 27 while wearing her prom dress. Brennan, who recently graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High, didn’t get to wear her prom dress to the dance because it was canceled due to COVID-19.

Samantha Brennan never got a chance to debut her prom dress at her senior prom.

The 18-year-old Fort Dodge Senior High graduate was among the unlucky senior class whose prom nights were canceled due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

But even though she didn’t get to twirl her skirt around the dance floor, Brennan found another place she could wear her prom dress — a truck pull.

Brennan entered the Manson Greater Crater Days Truck Pull on June 27. Though the original event was canceled due to COVID-19 — an occurrence Brennan is all too familiar with — Sports Park Raceway outside of Fort Dodge volunteered to host the truck pull.

“My truck is just kind of in the garage right now, so I used my dad’s Chevy 2500 for that truck pull,” Brennan explained.

During the truck pull, the center link of the Chevrolet broke. Luckily, Brennan said, it’s still under warranty.

Brennan said she and her family have a close connection with truck pull events and she just wouldn’t have felt right if she missed the June 27 truck pull.

“So I traded in my heels for my sneakers that night,” she said. “It’s a good experience that I’ve never felt before, so I decided to go out and give it my all.”

Brennan said the other truck pull contestants were supportive of her that night.

“It was different because they really don’t see many girls come out in dresses to a truck pull,” she said.

Brennan added that she’ll never forget this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
