A “carelessly discarded cigarette” caused a small fire outside a trailer home in Otho on Thursday afternoon, according to Otho Fire Chief Marty Smith. Smith said another Otho resident was driving past 503 S. Highway St. just before 5 p.m. and noticed a box on the deck outside the trailer was on fire. The resident called the fire department and alerted the homeowners, who were inside and unaware of the fire. Smith said the fire was caused by a discarded cigarette igniting the box of items. The fire was extinguished by the time the Otho Fire Department arrived. A large section of siding and insulation was melted and burned, but there was no major structural damage to the home. No one was injured.
