Man charged after police pursuit, crash

Test results show .198 blood alchohol content

An Ogden man has been hit with multiple charges after a March police pursuit initiated by a physical altercation outside Top Hat Lounge ended in a crash at UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center.

Austin Glaspey, 25, is charged with felony eluding, first-degree harassment and operating while intoxicated after Fort Dodge police say he threatened to kill people and crashed into a light pole at the hospital with a .198% blood alcohol content — more than double the legal limit — shortly after midnight March 17.

Glaspey made a written court appearance Tuesday via an attorney, since he is currently committed to an inpatient program at the V.A. of Des Moines and not scheduled for discharge until late May or early June.

The accident report shows his brand-new Toyota Tacoma was totalled. The driver hit a median near the hospital’s entrance, sending his truck airborne before striking the pole that left him trapped in his vehicle.

Glaspey refused a Breathalyzer test and was unable to perform standard field sobriety tests immediately after the crash, but consented to a blood draw for chemical testing.

Glaspey’s harassment criminal complaint says that he threatened to kill two individuals. Police previously said that the incident was sparked by Glaspey attempting to grab another man’s arm and drag him while driving his pickup truck.

The fight that started outside Top Hat Lounge on South Eighth Street resulted in a pursuit through Iowa Central Community College’s campus before ending at the hospital.

While officers talked to the 56-year-old victim who managed to break free, other officers located the man’s truck driving on Kenyon Road towards Iowa Central’s campus. The driver attempted to flee as officers initiated a traffic stop, leading a chase through the campus and cutting across a lawn near Friendship Haven before crashing.

The man was extricated and transported to the hospital for medical attention with minor injuries after the crash.

Glaspey waived his initial appearance on the charges in Webster County Magistrate Court this week and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 8.

His eluding charge is a class D felony. His harassment charge is an aggravated misdemeanor, and his first-offense OWI charge is a serious misdemeanor.
