Fight leads to police pursuit, accident

A fight outside the Top Hat Lounge early Tuesday morning resulted in a pursuit through Iowa Central Community College’s campus that ended in a crash on UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center’s property.

Responding to a call at Top Hat for the fight at 12:19 a.m., Fort Dodge police said the incident started as an altercation between two men as one in his truck attempted to grab the other’s arm and drag him along while driving away.

While officers talked to the 56-year-old victim who managed to break free, other officers located the man’s truck driving on Kenyon Road towards Iowa Central’s campus. The driver, age 25, attempted to flee as officers initiated a traffic stop, leading a chase through the campus and cutting across a lawn near Friendship Haven before crashing.

The driver hit a median near the hospital’s entrance, sending his truck airborne before striking a pole on UnityPoint property that left him trapped in his vehicle shortly after 12:30 a.m.

The man was extricated and transported to the hospital for medical attention with minor injuries. He faces a pending investigation with the Iowa State Patrol for suspicion of operating while intoxicated. His name has not been released as charges are pending.

Starting at $4.94/week.
