FD council sets 2020 paving program

Engineer hired for Veterans Bridge job

A fresh coat of asphalt will be applied to several Fort Dodge streets this summer as a result of a contract awarded Monday by the City Council.

The council hired Fort Dodge Asphalt Co. to do the work at a cost of $542,158.47.

These streets will be repaved:

∫ 14th Street between Sixth and 10th avenues north.

∫ Crest Avenue.

∫ Second Avenue North between 22nd Street and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

∫ Seventh Avenue South near 30th Street.

∫ 30th Street between Fifth and Eighth avenues south.

The council also started the process of rehabilitating Veterans Bridge on First Avenue South by hiring an engineering firm to prepare plans for the work.

Calhoun-Burns and Associates Inc., of West Des Moines, was awarded a $197,200 contract. The firm will draft the plans for the job this year, with the construction to be done next year.

The council awarded one other major contract Monday when it bought new software to manage the city’s financial records, utility billing and payroll functions. The software is being purchased from Tyler Technologies, of Yarmouth, Maine, for $387,473.

The council awarded those contracts during a session that was conducted electronically. Mayor Matt Bemrich, City Manager David Fierke, City Attorney Mark Crimmins and Jeff Nemmers, the city clerk and finance director, were in the council meeting room, but all members of the council participated via computer.
