Juveniles face burglary, weapons charges

A 14-year-old male and a 13-year-old female are facing multiple charges in connection to a burglary where both money and a firearm were taken. The gun was later used to fire shots at a vehicle and a house, according to the Fort Dodge Police Department.

The charges stem from a burglary that was reported on Jan. 15 at about 8:30 a.m.

Police responded to the area of the 3100 block of 10th Avenue South where the victim said an undisclosed amount of money, one firearm, and other items were stolen.

Officers determined juveniles were likely responsible for that burglary and had likely sold or given the firearms to other juveniles, according to Fort Dodge Police Capt. Ryan Gruenberg.

Gruenberg reported that investigators learned the stolen firearm was once again stolen by another juvenile in the 1300 block of Sixth Avenue North.

Investigators were able to recover several items that were stolen during the initial burglary on 10th Avenue South.

Then on Jan. 17 at 4:19 a.m., the Webster County 911 dispatch center received a call about shots fired in the 300 block of G Street.

One residence and one vehicle sustained damage from gunfire, according to police.

No injuries were reported.

Gruenberg said police were able to determine the burglary and shots fired cases were related.

Multiple search warrants were executed and investigators recovered the majority of the stolen items including the firearm that was involved.

On Wednesday, the 14-year-old male and 13-year-old female were arrested.

The 14-year-old is charged with intimidation with a dangerous weapon, a class C felony; third-degree burglary, a class D felony; going armed with intent, a class D felony; reckless use of a firearm, an aggravated misdemeanor; carrying weapons, an aggravated misdemeanor; and possession of stolen property, a serious misdemeanor.

The 13-year-old female is charged with trafficking a stolen weapon, a class C felony; third-degree burglary, a class D felony; carrying weapons, an aggravated misdemeanor; and transferring firearm to a person under the age of 21, a serious misdemeanor.

Both juveniles have been transported to the Central Iowa Juvenile Detention Center in Eldora.

“As our investigators continue their investigation, additional charges are possible,” Gruenberg said. “This is certainly an alarming investigation involving individuals of such a young age and firearms. We encourage those with information on this incident, or any other illegal activity, to contact the Fort Dodge Police Department.”
