HUMBOLDT — Greg Darling, the superintendent of the Humboldt Community School District, has apparently been placed on administrative leave.

A district-wide email was sent out on Tuesday stating that Darling has been placed on administrative leave, with pay, pending an investigation.

The email stated that his leave of absence is not tied to any allegations of misconduct against students, misappropriation of funds, or other illegal conduct.

The announcement was made one day after Humboldt’s school board meeting, which was held Monday at 5:30 p.m.

An early retirement for Darling was one of the items on the board’s agenda. Darling has been the superintendent for more than 10 years.

Early retirements for other key leadership positions in the district were also on the agenda.

In addition to Darling, the board was to consider early retirements for Lori Westhoff, Humboldt High School principal; Tamela Johnson, curriculum director; and George Bruder, elementary principal.

It’s not clear whether the board approved those early retirement requests. If approved, those retirements would be effective June 30.

Two sheriff’s deputies attended the meeting to keep the peace, according to Chief Deputy Cory Lampe, of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.

“We were contacted by the school board and were asked to have a law enforcement presence to keep the peace,” Lampe said. “And we did.”

No arrests were made in connection to the meeting.

Emails sent to Tate Satern, school board president; Suzanne Newton, board vice president-at large; and board members Kathy Yoakam and Bob Myott, were not immediately returned on Tuesday.

An attempt to reach Darling by phone was unsuccessful.
