Drivers walk away from semi crash

A semitrailer versus car crash on U.S. Highway 20 in Calhoun County left a sedan driver with a possible concussion Thursday morning.

A New Co-op semi turning west onto the highway from Xenia Avenue was rear-ended by a Chevrolet Impala as it gained speed around 9:45 a.m., according to Iowa State Patrol Trooper Paul Gardner. The driver of the Impala, Taylor Nelson of Otho, 24, was transported by ambulance to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge for a non-life-threatening concussion.

The two occupants in the semi had no injuries.

The semi was left with functional damage that required a tow. The Impala was totalled.

Nelson was cited for failure to stop in assured clear distance, Gardner said. The driver of the semi, Richelle Sierra, 51, is still under investigation for potential violations, he added.

Gardner said the last similar crash he covered involving a semitrailer and car resulted in a fatality.
