We wish you a Merry Mulch(mas)

City program will recycle used trees

Several residents have already taken advantage of the city of Fort Dodge’s Merry Mulch program to dispose of their Christmas trees at the drop-off site in Oleson Park.

There’s already a growing pile of Christmas trees neatly stacked up next to the sign that reads “place Christmas trees here” in the parking lot at Oleson Park.

One of the trees is even wrapped in a red and green mesh bag, another has flocking melting away in the rain.

Allof these trees — witnesses to a happy gathering of family, friends and rolled eyes as that one uncle everyone wished wasn’t there began discussing politics — have served their purpose.

From now until Jan. 26, 2020, Fort Dodge residents can drop them off at the site for proper disposal.

The city of Fort Dodge Forestry Department even has a name to go with the service, “Operation Merry Mulch.”

It’s a 29-year-old tradition.

City crews will periodically collect the pile of trees during working hours and then mulch them, merrily.

To keep everyone safe, residents are asked to remove any tree stands, wires, nails, lights, decorations, ornaments and stray Elves on Shelves from the tree before dropping them off.

The drop-off site is located near the park cabin.
