Two men are facing multiple charges after they ran from police Thursday afternoon in downtown Fort Dodge, according to the Fort Dodge Police Department.

One of the men allegedly took a swing at an officer before he was taken into custody, police reported.

The two men, Morquett B. Jackson, 34, and Johnnie Jackson Jr., 56, both of Fort Dodge, were initially stopped in their vehicle for a seat belt violation.

The traffic stop was made in the 100 block of South 12th Street.

The officer approached the vehicle and began talking to the men.

At that time, the officer had reason to believe illegal narcotics were in the vehicle, the Police Department reported.

But before the traffic stop concluded, Morquett Jackson allegedly drove away.

Officers pursued the vehicle as it continued at low speeds, circling a four block area from Central Avenue and 12th Street, police reported.

Eventually, Morquett Jackson left the vehicle and ran on foot in the 1200 block of First Avenue North before he was arrested.

Meanwhile, Johnnie Jackson Jr. also ran on foot. Before he was arrested, Johnnie Jackson swung at an officer and hit him in the face.

Johnnie Jackson Jr. is charged with assault on a person in certain occupations causing bodily injury, an aggravated misdemeanor; and interference with official acts causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor.

Morquett Jackson is charged with eluding, a serious misdemeanor; interference with official acts causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor; and several traffic citations.

During the course of the investigation, officers located what they believe to be illegal narcotics. Further charges are pending.

The two men are being held in the Webster County Jail.
