Included in each Gene Giraffe Project care package is a plush giraffe and other personalized items.

The Gene Giraffe Project will host its second annual run for kids with rare diseases on Saturday at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park.

The event will feature a walk and run along with a kids run, according to Doug Passow, president of Gene Giraffe Project.

“Our project raises awareness, advances cures through research, and raises funds for rare disease families who endure long hospital visits due to a rare diseased family member or child,” Passow said.

Passow said the Gene Giraffe Project sends personalized care packages to children with rare diseases.

The packages include specific items the child likes, he said. And of course, a plush giraffe.

“We also do a lot of our work upgrading equipment, and helping make the medical experience for kids easier as most kids with rare diseases spend a lot of their lives at doctor’s appointments and hospital visits,” Passow said.

Passow said the project was founded on a promise made to his niece, Ava Passow, who died of a rare disease at the age of 3.

“It was built to provide connectivity for kids with rare diseases in the area, and an outlet of hope for kids with rare diseases,” Passow said.

Registration for the run starts at 9 a.m.

The 5k run will take place through the trails at Kennedy Park. The walk will be around Kennedy Park.
