Man killed in crash with semi

A Subaru Forester SUV crashed into the back of a NEW Cooperative semitrailer on Vasse Avenue just off of U.S. Highway 20 on Thursday around noon. The driver of the SUV was taken by ambulance to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center but died en route. The driver of the semi was uninjured.

A Subaru Forester SUV crashed into the back of a NEW Cooperative semitrailer on Vasse Avenue just off of U.S. Highway 20 on Thursday around noon. The driver of the SUV was taken by ambulance to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center but died en route. The driver of the semi was uninjured.
DUNCOMBE — One man died Thursday after his Subaru Forester SUV ran into the back of a semitrailer just off of U.S. Highway 20, on Vasse Avenue south of Duncombe.
The crash was reported just before noon.
A NEW Cooperative semitrailer driven by Kirk Gunderson, of Hampton, was driving west on Highway 20 when the truck turned north onto Vasse Avenue, according to the Iowa State Patrol. The State Patrol reported that Ricky Mason, the driver of the SUV owned by Quest Diagnostics, did not see the semitrailer turn and collided with the back of the trailer.
Mason, of Dysart, was taken by ambulance to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center, but died en route to the hospital from injuries suffered in the crash.
According to ISP Trooper Paul Gardner, Gunderson was not injured in the collision.

The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol and no citations have been issued.
The Webster County Sheriff’s Department, Duncombe Volunteer Fire Department and an ambulance from the Fort Dodge Fire Department also responded.
