Iowa Central announces Hall of Famers

Induction ceremony is Oct. 5

Joe Anthonsen

A teacher who got the most out of his students, a U.S. Army veteran who continues to be a generous volunteer and a former college wrestler who gave it his all on the mat, are among this year’s group of Triton alumni who will be inducted into the Iowa Central Community College Hall of Fame.

The event to honor the inductees will be held Oct. 5 at the college.

The late Larry Boyd, who served the college as a math and science teacher, will receive the inaugural Distinguished Faculty and Staff award.

“When we are serving our students, our staff and faculty have a great impact on students and they remember it for years to come,” said Mary Ludwig, the college’s executive director of development and alumni. “So it was important for us to bestow recognition on those folks. Many people came to mind and are deserving, but we could just select one.”

Boyd taught math and science at Iowa Central from 1998 to 2004. He later served as department chair of mathematics and science from 2005 to 2010.

Larry Boyd

Ludwig said one of the letters of recommendation for Boyd mentioned his passion for education.

“In addition to being a loving father and husband, his love for Iowa Central was eminent because he was so involved throughout the organization,” Ludwig read from the letter.

Ludwig added, “Something else Larry did really well — he really knew what it took to engage students and keep their interest with his calm demeanor. He had a very approachable personality and made teaching and learning fun for students.”

Boyd passed way in 2016 after battling Lewy body dementia. His wife, Connie Boyd, will be accepting the award.

Charlie Walker, a Fort Dodge attorney, will be honored in the distinguished alumni category.

Margo Halm

Walker, a U.S. Army veteran, has volunteered in numerous ways throughout the community.

“Mr. Walker has been involved in a lot of activities throughout the community that have been important to many including the Shellabration event,” Ludwig said. “He’s been involved with that for many years. He’s also the director and legal counsel for the Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight. That is an effort that has so much meaning and importance for people who have made great sacrifices for our country. Being able to honor him is wonderful.”

Walker has also volunteered his time for state and local track meets since the 1980s.

Erik Josephson, president of Josephson Manufacturing Co., will be honored in the athletic category.

Josephson, a Fort Dodge Senior High graduate, was the Iowa Central outstanding athlete of the year in 1993.

According to Ludwig, Josephson came back from a torn ACL in the same year to win the junior college national title.

Josephson was a two-time NJCAA district champion.

Dr. Jesse Ulrich, superintendent of the Fort Dodge Community School District, is another inductee in the distinguished alumni category.

“One of his letters of recommendation shared that Ulrich exemplifies the type of leadership and character the FDCSD seeks in a superintendent,” Ludwig said. “He leads by example and is practical in approach, but at the same time unwavering in his commitment to excellence.”

Dr. Margo Halm will be a second generation alumni inducted into the Hall of Fame. Her father, Robert Halm, received the Humanitarian Award posthumously in 2013.

Jesse Ulrich

The 2003 baseball team and baseball player Joe Anthonsen will be also recognized in the athletic category.

“For more than 50 years, Iowa Central has helped students get to the next step to achieve their dreams and be a vibrant part of their community,” said Dr. Dan Kinney, Iowa Central president. “Our Hall of Fame event provides Iowa Central, fellow alumni, faculty and staff a chance to recognize their contributions and accomplishments.”

Ludwig said the college welcomes the public to nominate others for future years.

“Each year Iowa Central graduates a number of students that are full of potential and have great success in their lifetime,” Ludwig said. “The Hall of Fame banquet gives Iowa Central the opportunity to recognize a few folks each year that have made a difference in the lives of many. We know we are not aware of every alumni that deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, so we always encourage nominations. Folks can call us or send an email to nominate someone in future years.
