Earl Radke holds a promotional check for the $300,000 prize he won in an Iowa Lottery scratchoff game.

A Fort Dodge man said he was very careful as he drove to Iowa Lottery headquarters in Clive to claim a $300,000 prize.

“Oh yeah: Speed limits all the way until I hit the traffic, (and) make sure I stay in the slow lane until I get here,” Earl Radke, 52, told officials Wednesday as he claimed his “$300,000 Platinum Cash” prize.

While on his way to participate in his golf league last week, Radke stopped at Casey’s, 2007 N. 15th St. in Fort Dodge. He cashed in a $20-winning ticket from earlier that day and decided to purchase a $30 ticket in the $300,000 Platinum Cash game.

“I was going to get another one, a $10 scratch-off, and I said, ‘To heck with it, go big or go home,’ and so I got the $30 one,” he said.

He scratched the ticket in his car and was shocked to reveal the game’s third top prize. He texted his wife, Monica, with the news, but said she didn’t believe him, so he texted her a photo of the winning ticket and she called him immediately.

“And then, I had to play a round of golf,” Radke said. “Let me tell you, when I played that round of golf, I was fairly relaxed.”

Radke, who works in the manufacturing industry, said he doesn’t have any immediate plans for his winnings, but paying bills and investing it are considerations.

The $300,000 Platinum Cash scratch game is a $30 game that features eight top prizes of $300,000 and overall odds of 1 in 2.39.
