Police probe pickup in river situation

A pickup truck was pulled out of the Des Moines River in Fort Dodge Friday morning as investigators worked to figure out why it was apparently driven into the water Thursday night.

“We are still investigating the incident and exactly why it happened,” police Capt. Ryan Gruenberg said Friday.

He said police are considering the possibility that the man who was operating the truck was under the influence of something when he drove into the river.

Police received three phone calls at about 8:45 p.m. Thursday from people reporting a truck in the river. Gruenberg said he did not know if any of those people actually saw the vehicle going into the water.

He said the man drove the 2002 Dodge Dakota down a boat ramp and into the river. The truck then floated downstream before coming to a stop not far from the Kenyon Road Bridge.

The driver of the truck has not been identified by police. He apparently jumped out of the truck as it went into the water.

The truck was hauled out of the water at about 10 a.m. Friday.

The incident remains under investigation by city police and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
