Man dies on construction site near Lakota

Accident remains under investigation

LAKOTA — A Texas man has died after being hit by a truck at a wind farm construction site in Kossuth County, according to officials.

Lee Gruver, 51, of Daisetta, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene in rural Lakota Tuesday.

Sgt. Nathan Ludwig, with the Iowa State Patrol, said the accident was reported at 2:20 p.m. The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Department, along with area rescue agencies, were dispatched to the scene.

Witnesses reported that Gruver was at the construction site when he was hit by a semi truck, according to Ludwig.

He couldn’t confirm that Gruver was a construction worker, but he did say witnesses reported Gruver was working with chains at the site.

Ludwig identified the construction site as a wind turbine farm for Alliant Energy.

The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Department turned the investigation over to the Iowa State Patrol, and the state Department of Labor, as well as the state Occupational Safety and Health Administration, for further investigation.

A call to Iowa OSHA seeking more information was not returned by press time Thursday.

Ludwig said Gruver’s death is being investigated as an accident.

The incident is still under investigation.

Other agencies involved include Lakota Fire and EMS, Swea City Fire and EMS, Buffalo Center Police Department, Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department, the Kossuth County medical examiner and Kossuth County emergency management.
