Lake City man sentenced for gun theft conspiracy

SIOUX CITY — A Lake City man is among four people who were sentenced to prison on a gun theft conspiracy.

Daniel Powell, 25, was convicted of one count of conspiracy to possess and sell stolen firearms, one count of possession of a stolen firearm and one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

He received a sentence of 99 months in prison, according to the United States attorney’s office, Northern District of Iowa.

The U.S. attorney’s office said Powell, along with Tylor Boyd, 26, of Homer, Nebraska; and Colton Novak, 27, of Dakota City, Nebraska, broke into a store in Greene County, where they stole five guns, thousands of rounds of ammunition and other valuables.

Some of the guns were traded for methamphetamine, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

A fourth man, Matthew Lyman, 32, of Sioux City, joined the trio after the break-in and allegedly fired from one of the stolen guns on Feb. 5, 2018, because he wanted to scare people who were in a dispute with his co-defendants.

This incident happened in Dakota County, Nebraska.

Lyman also allegedly robbed two men just moments apart on Feb. 14, 2018, firing the gun to frighten his victims and bystanders.

All four men were convicted and received various sentences.

Boyd was sentenced to three years in prison, Novak received 50 months in prison and Lyman received the longest sentence of 15 years in prison.

The U.S. attorney’s office said that the four were also ordered to pay $87,713.86 in restitution, as well as serve a three-year term of supervised release once they’re done with prison.
