Webster County will get a new set of portable traffic lights to use in construction zones.
This will provide another tool for traffic control and should make sites safer, said Webster County Engineer Randy Will.
"When you do road work, there are a number of ways to control traffic," Will said. "During the day or overnight, if you have some signals out there, that reduces our liability tremendously. These will be a very useful tool to have in our arsenal for doing road work."
The portable traffic signals will be purchased through a grant from the Iowa Department of Transportation's Traffic Safety Improvement Program, he said. The supervisors approved an application to this program back in July.
"We have utilized this funding before," Will said. "With safety grants, we have received a lot of signs, chevrons, that sort of thing."
The DOT will provide a grant of $60,000 for the county to purchase the signals, which can control traffic approaching from two directions.
The county will likely share the signals with surrounding communities, Will said.

Webster County is also planning a repaving project for the parking lot at its bank building at 723 First Ave. S.
"This is the parking lot on the south end of the building," Supervisor Mark Campbell said. "We're going to completely re-do that along with the landscaping, and add some lighting and other beautification things to the building."
The Board of Supervisors approved plans and specifications for the project at Tuesday's meeting, and will have a bid letting on May 28.
The building houses the county attorney, public health and veterans affairs offices, as well as Northwest Bank.
McClure Engineering Co., of Fort Dodge, is in charge of the plans, Campbell said.
