FD teen, 13, charged in shooting incident

Boy faces multiple charges

A teenage boy has been charged after a shooting investigation in Fort Dodge early Thursday morning.

The 13-year-old boy is not being identified by investigators due to his age, Fort Dodge Police Capt. Ryan Gruenberg said.

The teen has been charged with going armed with intent, a class D felony; carrying weapons, an aggravated misdemeanor; and reckless use of a firearm, also an aggravated misdemeanor.

Gruenberg said around 1:55 a.m. Thursday, police were dispatched to the area of 10th Avenue Southwest and 14th Street Southwest after receiving report of gunshots being fired.

The caller told dispatch that they heard at least two shots.

Officers learned that a group of people was gathered in the area of the shooting and, at one point, one of the people left the area and returned with a gun, firing two shots towards the other people who were gathered.

Gruenberg said it’s not believed anyone was hurt, but added that investigators are still looking for some people who were present in the area at the time of the shooting.

Police soon were notified by an area resident that a bullet had pierced their home. Officers retrieved that bullet.

During the investigation, officers located a gun at another home, which led to them charging the 13-year-old.

Gruenberg said the teen has been transported to Central Iowa Detention in Eldora.

He praised the cooperation of witnesses, which helped lead to a quick arrest.

“When officers arrived on scene, they were met with immediate information from witnesses which played a crucial role in the quick resolution of this case,” he said. “Without this immediate witness information, the case investigation likely would not have evolved as rapidly as it did.”

While there has been an arrest, Gruenberg said the investigation is ongoing.
