OTHO — The Otho Pub, which is known across the state for its loaded hash browns, will shutter in the coming weeks.
“My wife (Nancy) is sick and she’s not able to do it, so we decided to close it,” owner Orville Slotten said on Wednesday.
He said the last day of business will be May 25.
The hash browns from the Otho Pub are on a list of 100 things to eat in Iowa before you die. That list was published in an Iowa newspaper.
“It’s going to be dearly missed,” Otho Mayor Jason Hamburger said. “You can almost go anywhere in the state and when you say you’re from Otho, they mention those hash browns from the Otho Pub. Everyone knows about their hash browns.”
Hamburger said he was surprised by the announcement.
“It was a sudden thing,” he said. “I think it was a surprise to everybody. Maybe not, but it was to me.”
Hamburger said he’ll miss the all-you-can-eat fish on Fridays and the all-you-can-eat chicken on Wednesdays.
“It’s always crowded and packed on a Friday night,” he said. “It’s a landmark.”
Slotten said he opened the business 31 years ago.
