Contractor hits gas line at Holy Trinity

-Messenger photo by Joe Sutter Fort Dodge Fire Chief Steve Hergenreter, right, speaks with contractors and MidAmerican Energy workers at the construction site for the new Holy Trinity Catholic Church, east of St. Edmond Catholic School.

Fort Dodge Fire Chief Steve Hergenreter said a contractor hit a 2-inch gas main between the school and the partially-constructed church around 1:15 p.m. Some kids were outside at recess, and were sent inside as a precaution, but there was no need to evacuate the school, Hergenreter said. Firefighters with air meters were able to confirm there was no danger to the school. MidAmerican Energy crews arrived quickly and were able to take care of the leak and begin to make repairs. Sixth Avenue North near the school was closed during the incident, but was opened up again fairly quickly, Hergenreter said. Fire crews were done on scene about 2:15 p.m., and the school was able to dismiss as normal. The incident came just as the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, was devastated by fire Monday afternoon.
