Payless ShoeSource closing in FD

Messenger photo by Bill Shea Payless Shoes at 3025 First Ave. S. in Fort Dodge will close at the end of the business day on Dec. 28.

The Payless ShoeSource store in Fort Dodge was crowded Thursday afternoon with shoppers taking advantage of the deep discounts offered in a going-out-of-business sale.

The store at 3025 First Ave. S. is closing. Customers have been told Dec. 28 will be the last day the store will be open.

Representatives of Dallas, Texas-based Payless ShoeSource did not respond to an email inquiry regarding the store’s pending closure.

Payless ShoeSource has had a store in Fort Dodge since 1969. It was originally located at 118 S. 25th St. It later moved to the Crossroads Mall, and eventually moved into the strip mall on the south side of the 3000 block of First Avenue South.

The company declared bankruptcy in April 2017. At that time, executives issued a statement in which they announced plans to immediately close 400 stores and “aggressively manage the remaining real estate lease portfolio.”

The company emerged from bankruptcy protection in August 2017 after closing 673 stores.
