Manson man, survivor in truck-train crash, cited

John Carter, 75, was injured

MANSON — A Manson man has been identified as the person who survived a collision with a train west of Fort Dodge Monday afternoon.

According to Iowa State Patrol crash reports, John Carter, 75, of Manson, was traveling southbound in a pickup truck on Xavier Avenue, just north of Iowa Highway 7.

Carter was cited for failure to properly stop at a railroad crossing, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

The train, which had about three engines connected, was moving eastbound.

The grade crossing signals were activated on the tracks, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Carter proceeded through the intersection and the truck was struck by the train on the right front corner of the vehicle.

The train is operated by Canadian National Railway.

The truck caught fire after the collision. It came to rest in a ditch northeast of the tracks.

The crash was reported at about 1:40 p.m.

Carter was able to get out of the vehicle under his own power, according to the reports.

He was conscious and talking before he was transported by Calhoun County EMS ambulance, the Iowa State Patrol reported. He was initially transported to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge.

The truck was totaled. The train sustained minor damage.

A nearby utility pole sustained $2,000 in damage.
