MANSON — A man survived after the pickup truck he was driving caught fire when it collided with a train west of Fort Dodge Monday afternoon.

According to Sgt. Aaron Smidt, of Iowa State Patrol, the driver of the truck was traveling southbound on Xavier Avenue, just north of Iowa Highway 7.

The train, which had about three engines connected, was moving eastbound, Smidt reported.

The grade crossing signals were activated on the tracks, according to Smidt.

The driver of the truck proceeded through the intersection and the truck was struck by the train, he said.

The train is operated by Canadian National Railway.

The truck came to rest in a ditch northeast of the tracks.

The crash was reported at about 1:40 p.m.

When Manson volunteer firefighters arrived, the truck was fully engulfed, according to Capt. David Hoeppner, of the Manson Fire Department.

Hoeppner said there were some flames going up the light pole nearby.

“We had our quick attack truck,” he said. “We pulled our hose line off of there and made an initial attack with that.”

The driver of the truck was out of the vehicle when firefighters arrived, Hoeppner said.

Two metal gas cans were in the back of the truck.

“There was a fair amount of stuff in the back of the truck that got thrown around the tracks there,” he said. “Our first truck got it knocked down pretty well. When the second arriving truck got there, we had to get some guys in air packs and attack the fire inside of the truck.”

Officials did not identify the driver of the truck Monday.

The driver was treated on scene in a Calhoun County EMS ambulance. He was to be transported to UnityPoint — Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge.

The crash remained under investigation Monday.

Jonathan Abecassis, a spokesperson with Canadian National Railway, said the company was investigating the circumstances of the crash.

The Manson Volunteer Fire Department, Manson Police Department, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department, Webster County Sheriff’s Department, Canadian National Railway, Iowa State Patrol, and Calhoun County EMS, were on scene.
