Who do you look up to, and who are your heroes or role models?

I look up to my teacher, Mrs. Hatton, because she is so kind and she is always willing to help me. She makes our classroom a fun place to be and makes everyone feel welcome. My mom and I both love art and she always inspires me to be creative. She also encourages me to follow my dream of becoming an architect. I look up to my dad in many ways and he and I both love music. We love going to concerts and music stores together. I also have had some awesome camp counselors that I look up to and have taught me a lot.

What inspires you to do the things you do that go above and beyond classwork?

I came to Duncombe in second grade and I remember being afraid of going to a new school. This year we got a new student in our class and I wanted to help her feel comfortable at Duncombe because I remember what it felt like to be new. When I see that my teachers and my principal love being at school, it makes me want to make others feel welcome too. This year I’m also helping my little sister feel comfortable coming to kindergarten at Duncombe!

How do you see your leadership taking you into the future?

One of my goals for the future is to be an architect. I know that I’m going to have to work hard in school for many years. I think that being a leader will help me stick to my goal and maybe I’ll have my own architecture firm someday. My older sister and I and some of our friends started a book club and we take turns being the discussion leaders. I think that being a leader for little clubs like this now will help me be a leader with bigger projects as I get older.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership means to help guide people in the right direction and set a good example. I enjoy helping classmates understand what we’re doing and helping them if they’re having trouble. Some of my teachers have encouraged me to help others if I get done with my work early. Part of being a leader that I enjoy is brainstorming lots of ideas with my group so it can help us in the projects and activities we’re doing.

What are you working hardest on?

I work hard in math because I know I’ll need to be good in math to be an architect. I love to read and I am excited to be a part of the new Battle of the Books group in our class. I also love making sculptures out of cardboard and I draw a lot in my spare time. I work hard to make my drawings and cardboard inventions look realistic.
