Who do you look up to, and who are your heroes or role models?

When I was little I had shoulder surgery at Mayo Clinic. After meeting all the doctors and seeing how they treated me, I decided I wanted to be a doctor. My uncle is a doctor and when he showed me his clinic it sparked my interest in becoming a doctor. Doctors are role models to me because they work hard to help others.

What inspires you to do the things you do that go above and beyond classwork?

I like being involved in musical activities (violin and singing) and sports like soccer and tennis. I like being involved in these activities because they are so different from school work, yet I am still learning. In violin I take individual and group lessons. During group lessons we work together on learning songs to perform as a group during recitals. Soccer has helped me learn to be part of a team and work with others to accomplish a goal.

How do you see your leadership taking you into the future?

I want to be a pediatrician when I grow up. My leadership skills will help me be gentle with patients and understanding of what they need.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership means standing up for what is right even when things get tough and when other people doubt you. It also means not following the crowd but sticking with a path that you feel is right for yourself and others. I try to treat people with respect and listen to them. I try to encourage others when they are doubtful.

What are you working hardest on?

Right now, I am working hard on my music. I’ve been playing violin since kindergarten and hope one day to be part of a symphony. Last year I was in the 2018 regional honor choir and this year I was selected for the 2018 State of Iowa Opus Choir. Music is more than just learning rhythm and beats and notes. It is about commitment. Commitment to music has taught me that you have to put effort and time into something to achieve it. Dedication and hard work pay off.
