60 hogs die when semi tips near Gowrie

GOWRIE — About 60 hogs were killed Tuesday morning after a semitrailer tipped over at the intersection of Baxter Avenue and 360th Street, according to the Webster County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash was reported at about 7:27 a.m.

The driver of the semi attempted a right-hand turn on Baxter Avenue and turned the corner too short, which caused the truck to tip over, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

It was loaded with about 170 head of “fat hogs,” according to the report.

Mid-Iowa Towing, of Fort Dodge, was called to lift the truck back to an upright position.

The intersection remained closed until 12:30 p.m.

Farnhamville volunteer firefighters provided a tanker truck to help keep the hogs cooled while being transferred.

Webster County sheriff’s deputies were assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Farnhamville Volunteer Fire Department and Mid Iowa Towing.
