Tee’d Off Against Violence golf outing will raise money for D/SAOC

Following a successful inaugural year, the Tee’d Off Against Violence golf tournament will be coming back to help raise money for the Domestic/Sexual Assault Outreach Center’s Homicide/Other Violent Crimes Program.

This year’s tournament will be held Aug. 4 at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course starting at 9 a.m.

Marie Harvey, supervisor of the Homicide/Other Violent Crimes Program, said last year’s tournament raised a little more than $6,000.

Most of the tournament this year has remained the same, but this year, D/SAOC is teaming up with Dixon Golf to hold different contests and offer prizes.

“They do par three and par five hole assignments,” Harvey said. “Each player will get a free golf ball from them, they’ll raffle off a $350 driver. Everyone who participates will get a certificate for a free hybrid golf club, a free subscription to Golf Digest and other cool stuff.”

Harvey said Dixon will also be holding a hole-in-one contest.

Heather Stanley, a counselor with the Homicide/Other Violent Crimes Program, said Dixon’s support will benefit D/SAOC as well.

“They’ll do their own prize giveaways on their holes,” she said. “Whatever they sell for raffles, we get a portion of it just to help us out as well.”

D/SAOC will also be doing different events and contests at certain holes.

“They’ll do a couple hole events, we’ll do a couple hole events,” Stanley said. “We’ll make it kind of fun and do something different.”

Harvey added that the tournament is four-person best ball.

A freewill donation lunch will also be served and is being provided by Lefti’s Bar and Grill.

Following the tournament, a silent auction will be held at Eagles Ballroom featuring Swaggers.

Auction items include a Minnesota Vikings package with tickets to an Oct. 14 game against the Arizona Cardinals; a signed print from Jon Lester of the Chicago Cubs; and a signed print from Antonio Brown of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Prizes will be handed out then.

To enter, it’s $200 per team or $50 per person by Saturday. After Saturday, it’ll be $240 per team or $60 per person.

The money raised from the golf tournament is important in helping D/SAOC’s operations.

Because it is grant-funded, Harvey said there are certain things that grants won’t pay for.

“If a family runs out of crime victims’ compensation funds for travel and lodging, then we use money raised from this to pay for hotel rooms, gas cards,” she said. “We’ve used it to pay for rent, clothes, food.”

She said last year was “a fun day” and it benefits the Homicide/Other Violent Crimes Program in many ways.

“It goes for a good cause,” she said. “Plus, it gets our awareness out there, since most people don’t know about us.”

D/SAOC and the Homicide/Other Violent Crimes program provide free and confidential services in 15 counties. They include Webster, Wright, Pocahontas, Calhoun, Hamilton, Humboldt, Kossuth and Greene.
