WEBSTER CITY — Judy Warwick defeated fellow county treasurer’s office employee Cheryl Westrum to secure the Republican nomination for Hamilton County treasurer.

Incumbent Treasurer Joni Hilpipre is retiring at the end of 2018 and is not seeking re-election.

Warwick received a total 515 votes, or 57.35 percent, while Westrum received 373 votes, or 41.54 percent, according to unofficial results.

Warwick said she was “amazed” and “excited” that she had won.

“I’m very, very happy for all my friends and family who voted for me,” Warwick said. “And all the residents of Hamilton County.”

She called her victory “overwhelming.”

Westrum said she was “surprised” by the results, but had praise for both campaigns.

“(They were) good, fair, honest campaigns,” she said. “And congratulations to Judy.”

Warwick, the assistant county treasurer, will face Democrat Colleen Hansen in November.
