Jewell man ID’d in Monday fatal fire
Gary Carlson was 73
JEWELL — Gary Carlson, 73, has been identified as the man who died in an early morning house fire in Jewell Monday morning, obituary records confirm.
Firefighters were called to the house, located at 2685 Poplar Grove, just after midnight.
Fire had completely engulfed the structure and flames ignited up to four vehicles, with some exploding.
The single-story, wood frame house was a total loss.
The fire also heated a 1,000-gallon LP gas tank which heated to the point that the excess flow valve was discharging LP gas and creating a flame.
Carlson was discovered inside the home when firefighters sifted through the debris.
The Jewell Volunteer Fire Department was assisted by Stanhope, Ellsworth, and Story City fire departments. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department and Ellsworth-Jewell-Stanhope police were also on scene.
Carlson’s body was taken to state medical examiners office late Monday.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
No foul play is suspected, Jewell Fire Chief Duane Hendrickson reported.
