Firefighters douse fire at Cargill

-Submitted photo
Firefighters from Fort Dodge, Clare and Barnum work to put out a fire at the Cargill plant west of Fort Dodge Sunday evening. Fort Dodge Firefighter Jeff Hill said a hydraulic line malfunctioned and sprayed fluid onto these very hot pipes, where it caught fire. “The pipes get extremely hot,” Hill said. “Over a thousand degrees.” Cargill personnel were able to control the fire with fire extinguishers, Hill said, but the flames also spread into the insulation around the pipes, located under metal shielding. Firefighters cut past the outside metal to get at the insulation to find where it was smoldering. Crews were on scene for about an hour and a half. Five off-duty firefighters were called back to the station to help cover the city while crews were at work at the ag park, Hill said.
