For the second time in two weeks, a former Yesway worker has been charged with stealing lottery tickets from the store.

Michell L. Ornellas, 35, of Rockwell City, is charged with one count of second-degree theft.

According to the criminal complaint, filed with the Webster County attorney’s office, the thefts occurred between June 26 and July 12 while Ornellas was a manager at Yesway, 115 N. 22nd St.

During that time period, she is accused of stealing $600 worth of Iowa Lottery tickets, which included $2,573.34 in cash.

The Fort Dodge Police Department was alerted to the incident after Yesway’s statewide assistant manager investigated the missing money and reported it to a Fort Dodge police officer.

Ornellas was ordered held on $5,000 bond during her initial appearance in Webster County Magistrate Court Wednesday morning.

Ornellas is the second former Yesway worker to be charged with stealing lottery tickets.

On Aug. 1, Christopher A. Breyfogle, 31, of Fort Dodge, a former assistant manager at the same Yesway store, appeared in Webster County Magistrate Court on two counts of first-degree theft and one count of theft of lottery tickets.

He’s accused of scanning each lottery ticket from 23 packs of tickets, which were worth $6,900, at multiple Hy-Vee locations on multiple dates.

Breyfogle is accused of committing the thefts in August 2016, which is when an Iowa Lottery official allegedly spotted Breyfogle redeeming large amounts of scratch-off Iowa Lottery tickets at a local retailer.

An audit discovered Yesway was short more than $12,430 in Iowa Lottery scratch-off tickets.

Breyfogle was released from the Webster County Jail with pre-trial supervision and his case has been sent to Webster County District Court.

Ornellas’ preliminary hearing has been set for Aug. 18.
