Webster County plans to sell two properties in the near future, and possibly three more by the end of the year.

The Webster County Board of Supervisors also approved purchase of two fabric and steel structures for salt and sand storage — one of which will replace a building destroyed in the May 16 windstorm.

Details haven’t been set on any sales yet, but the county secondary roads department hopes to sell its sheds in Callender and Gowrie, said Webster County Engineer Randy Will.

“We did acquire the Gowrie (Iowa Department of Transportation) shed in November, so we have vacated our Gowrie facility on Walnut Street,” Will said. “We’ve also moved two employees from the Callender facility to Gowrie.”

There’s no official decision yet, but Will said it’s likely these will be auctioned off in the near future.

A public hearing and official votes from the board will come before any auction is officially set.

Three other locations will likely be sold after the new maintenance facility is completed at 1950 225th St.

“Possibly that facility will be available around Labor Day,” Will said.

Once the new building is complete, the county will move out of its existing older building at 2096 240th St., located on the west side of Iowa Highway 169 just south of U.S. Highway 20.

“We’d also sell the Burnside maintenance facility, and there’s a possibility the Quonset building north of National Gypsum,” Will said.

That could happen late in the year, he said.

The supervisors also approved purchase of two salt/sand storage structures. One of these has long been planned for the new maintenance shed location, Will said.

“After the May 16 windstorm we did lose our facility at 2006 Racine Ave., east of Fort Dodge, so we added that,” Will said.

The only company to bid was Friedman Distribution Inc., of Belle Plaine, which will provide the buildings at $87,202.11 each.

These are BriteSpan buildings, and should be more weather resistant, Will said. They will be 72 feet wide by 84 feet deep and will protect the salt and sand used for the county roads.

Finally, the supervisors approved a contract for diesel to be delivered to the eight above-ground tanks secondary roads has throughout the county.

Bids were in terms of the margin they would charge per gallon. The low bid was from W & H Co-op, of Humboldt, with a margin of 10.5 cents per gallon on diesel 1; 9.5 cents on diesel 2; and 9.5 cents for premium diesel.

The bid documents specify estimated amounts of 5,000 gallons diesel 1; 10,000 gallons diesel 2; and 90,000 premium diesel.

The other bid came in from J.P. Byson Oil Company, of Fort Dodge, for 12 cents per gallon for all diesel types.

Will sent requests for bids to five local suppliers.

Starting at $4.94/week.
