Humboldt supervisors pursue building repairs after storm
DAKOTA CITY — The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors decided to seek an estimate to repair the storm damaged courthouse roof at Monday’s meeting.
County Auditor Peggy Rice said an inspection of the roof following a March hailstorm revealed a small hole. One contractor recommended repair, but another said despite the hole the roof was sound and should be good for at least eight to 10 years, Rice said. The insurance adjustor thought the roof should be repaired and reimbursed the county for the damage. Rice could not remember how much the claim was for.
It is a flat roof with rubber coating, she said.
“I suggest we fix the hole,” Supervisor Erik Underberg said.
Even minor damage should be repaired for preventive maintenance, he said.
“By coating it and recovering it would give us another five years after that,” said Supervisor Bruce Reimers. “I think it would be money well spent.”
The board asked Rice to obtain an estimate on the repair and coating the roof.
It has been at least six years since any work has been done on the roof, Rice said.
In other business, County Engineer Paul Jacobson said the May 16 storm took the roof off the sand and salt storage building at Hardy. Jacobson will check with the insurance company.
“Then we will clean up what we have, probably take the sand out of the bunker,” he said. “The bunker was in need of some work anyway.”
He will decide then about repairing or replacing the building.
“We will see what is going on once we remove the sand and go from there,” he said.
The board approved a quote for repairs to the Bode maintenance facility. Jensen Builders Ltd., of Fort Dodge, gave a quote of $4,065 for the repairs. Two doors on the building need repairs, Jacobson said.
“One was hit probably six years ago on an icy morning,” he said.
The other one was damaged by a truck wing this spring.
The board approved the quote.
Supervisor Rick Pedersen was absent.
