Fareway to close for officers’ funerals
Some Fareway stores throughout Iowa will be closed for one hour Monday and Tuesday to honor the two police officers killed in Des Moines last week.
The store in Fort Dodge and throughout this region will be closed from 11:40 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. Tuesday to honor Urbandale Police Officer Justin Martin, formerly of Rockwell City, whose funeral will be held at that time at the South Central Calhoun Middle School in Rockwell City.
Stores in the Des Moines area will close from 11 a.m. to noon on Monday for the funeral of Des Moines Police Sgt. Anthony Beminio.
Beminio, 38, and Martin, 24, were shot after 1 a.m. Wednesday while sitting in their patrol cars in separate incidents less than two miles apart, in what were called ambush-style attacks. Multiple bullets were fired into the vehicles.
The suspected shooter was arrested later that day and has been charged with first-degree murder.
It’s typical for Fareway to close during a funeral to allow workers to attend, said Fort Dodge Store Manager Chris Palm.
“A lot of times if someone will pass away in one of our stores, we would close down for an hour to let the employees go to the funeral,” Palm said. “And since he was close to this area, and had ties in this area, it’s just a great way to honor him.”
He added, “We’re all family here.”
