Intern assists the victim witness coordinator

Savanna Greenfield hasn’t quite figured out what she wants to do after college.

But Greenfield, a student at Iowa Central Community College, said she believes her internship with the Webster County attorney’s office could help her make a decision.

Greenfield has been interning with Victim Witness Coordinator Shelly Escobedo since late January.

The human services major said the internship sounded interesting to her.

“It just sounded perfect to me because I like helping people,” Greenfield said. “(I feel) victims get the short end of the stick sometimes. It’s an interesting opportunity, and one I probably wouldn’t be able to have again.”

Greenfield has relatives who work in human services, which helped get her interested in the field.

“My aunt does human services too, and I always liked listening to her stories,” she said. “I really like helping people and it seemed like a good field for me to go into. And there’s a lot of opportunities in that field too.”

Greenfield, who also considered majoring in criminal justice, has developed an interest in the court system during her internship.

“It’s something I’ve never seen before,” she said. “Even if they’re traffic tickets, I think they’re interesting to watch.”

“I had no idea about the different courts and the different levels of crime,” she added.

Right now her internship mainly consists of entering data and information, but she hopes to have more responsibility as her internship continues.

Escobedo said Greenfield is the third intern she has had through Iowa Central.

Greenfield and other interns have been beneficial to both her and the county attorney’s office.

“She’s a big help to me,” Escobedo said. “It’s also something I enjoy because I also went through human services with Iowa Central. They get to see the opportunities available in human services.”

Greenfield is enjoying her internship.

“I’m just really glad that I can do this opportunity because it’s opening my eyes to different places,” she said. “I never thought I’d be working with a county attorney’s office. Now I really like where I’m at.”
