Sword used to fend off Odebolt home invaders

ODEBOLT – Four people are facing charges after a home invasion in Odebolt during which the victim’s husband used a sword to defend himself and his wife.

Jordan Brunning, 20, of Alta; Dalton Sassman, 18; Whitney Ackerman, 20; and Levi Watts, 17, all of Storm Lake, are charged in the incident, which happened early Monday morning.

Sac County Sheriff Ken McClure said the home invasion occurred around 2 a.m. at 536 Second St.

Three men wearing hoodies and masks forced their way into the 53-year-old woman’s apartment after knocking on the door, according to McClure. He said the victim’s husband heard the men assaulting his wife in the kitchen.

“The husband held off the three with a samurai-type sword,” McClure said in a written statement.

During the struggle, one of the men lost his mask.

The husband recognized the man as Brunning.

The trio fled on foot.

The victim suffered broken bones and lacerations, according to McClure. She was treated and released at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.

Brunning, Sassman and Watts are each charged with first-degree burglary, willful injury resulting in bodily injury, and assault while participating in a felony resulting in bodily injury.

Ackerman is facing charges of conspiracy to commit a forcible felony and two counts of conspiracy to commit a non-forcible felony.

According to McClure, two days after the home invasion a search warrant was executed at Brunning’s home at 718 Main St. in Alta, where evidence was found and seized.

Through the investigation, McClure said Sassman, Ackerman and Watts were identified as suspects.

The trio were arrested Thursday night in Storm Lake.

Brunning was released from the Sac County Jail after posting bond.

Watts and Ackerman remain in jail on $50,000 and $10,000 bond, respectively.

Sassman has not yet made his initial court appearance, according to McClure.

The Buena Vista County sheriff’s office and Storm Lake Police Department assisted in the investigation.
